Interesting 19th century violoncello in need of restoration and bearing the repairer's label of Hermann Voigt, Vienna, anno 1889, the two piece back of medium curl with similar wood to the sides and head, the table of a fine width grain widening to the flanks and the varnish of a reddish-brown colour on a golden ground, 29 3/4", 75.60cm, nickel mounted bow (at fault)
*This instrument is sold with a hand-written note from William E. Hill & Sons dated September 10th 1934 concerning the instrument which was sent to them for repair; the family who own this violoncello also believe it was played by a family member in a quartet conducted by Albert Einstein and a copy of a photograph of this quartet, including this violoncello, is also included with the lot
